Tips and Tricks for Buying Chassis Parts

As the saying says, you get what you pay for, but sometimes you can find a real sweet deal going through a generic parts manufacturer.  You can usually navigate the rough waters of quality vs. expense if you follow some simple rules:

Generic parts websites:  There are plenty of generic parts sites out there, and unfortunately, with fake reviews, inaccurate product descriptions, or even parts that don't fit your vehicle, it is best to avoid these retailers. Look for duplicate photos on listings or bad spelling and language that just sounds "off."  If they can't be bothered to provide accurate information on their site, imagine what their warehouse looks like.

Look for origin of manufacture: Parts can be very expensive.  To cut costs, you might be tempted to buy parts a generic overseas manufacturer.  What's the worst that could happen? Parts is parts, right?  No.  Consider the loads, shaping, and OEM bolt compatibility you are working with on an aftermarket part.  All too often, we have seen someone save a few bucks with a part made in China, which they just have to grind, machine, and even weld to fit onto their rig.  When it comes to chassis and underbody parts, you cannot sacrifice strength and durability for cheap parts.

Reputable sellers: Some name brands have well-earned reputations.  It is best to stick with what works, even if it costs a little bit more.  Sellers are no different.  Some websites are consistent and reliable, with customer satisfaction their first priority, while others just ship any old junk to make a buck.  Look for indications of fly-by-night sellers such as generic websites, suspicious sounding customer reviews, and especially word of mouth from other off-roaders.

Call customer service:  If you are talking to a real person, that's a major step in the right direction.

Research return policies: Mistakes happen and a reputable seller stands behind their inventory.  Look for free shipping, especially on returns, and beware of huge restocking fees, which pretty much mean you'll be paying a lot more for the wrong part.  If you have to pay for shipping on the wrong part, that can get really expensive. It's a reputable seller who wants to make things right.

Check into online forums: Read the reviews on third party websites.  Reddit and other online forums will give it to you straight.

Talk to a mechanic: They have seen all sorts of builds and can point out what parts are quality and which are junk.  They have more than enough jobs lined up, so giving you the right information isn't cutting into their business if you are planning a DIY project.
